Cleaning Up After Two Hurricanes
Post-disaster assistance, recovery
Client: Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority
Project: Hurricane Debris Management
Location: Palm Beach County, FL

Issue

Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne struck Palm Beach County within weeks of each other during September 2004, causing extensive property damage. The county's Solid Waste Authority (SWA) needed to manage the debris recovery process.

Solution

We helped the SWA put its debris management plan into action by assisting with site monitoring, damage claim resolution, reporting and data entry. By the second day after the storm we had established four temporary debris monitoring sites, and within ten days ten debris sites were open. In the weeks that followed we managed a team of more than a hundred workers, including subconsultants, to monitor debris removal and establish and monitor debris management sites.

Benefits

Altogether we monitored the removal and management of 3 million cubic yards of debris. We also provided assistance with applications to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for reimbursement of cleanup costs.
