Faced with the dilemma of a shortage of trained minority engineers and environmental scientists, Malcolm Pirnie is taking action to improve the odds for tomorrow — by creating new opportunities for a greater number of minorities to become environmental professionals. Our scholarship programs support Malcolm Pirnie's long-term Diversity Initiative.

NACME celebrates 35 years of accomplishments
We sponsor the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME) Corporate Scholars Program, which strives to increase the representation of successful African American, American Indian and Latino men and women in engineering, technology, math, and science-based disciplines. This not-for-profit corporation offers scholarships, leadership training seminars, professional development and mentorships. Malcolm Pirnie's President and CEO, Bill Dee, served as Chair of the Board of Directors. Chief Technology Officer Doug is currently a member of the Board.
Application Process
Apply for a NACME scholarship during your freshman college year, and you can receive a summer internship during your sophomore, junior and senior years. You need a GPA of at least 2.7, but the average GPA is 3.27.

As a Pirnie/NACME Scholar, you can:
- Earn merit-based financial aid consisting of annual awards up to $3,000 per year (based on GPA).
- Attend NACME leadership development conferences.
- Network with students from other engineering disciplines and schools.
- Receive a supervised paid summer corporate internship.
- Be assigned a Pirnie professional as a mentor.
Malcolm Pirnie/UNCF Scholars Program
Established in 1997, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) creates new opportunities for young African Americans in the environmental profession. Representing a four-year, quarter-million-dollar commitment by Malcolm Pirnie, the program invests in scholarships, internships and mentoring to encourage greater numbers of young African American men and women to become environmental professionals.
The Pirnie/UNCF award consists of:
- $3,000 in tuition aid scholarships.
- a paid summer internship at a Malcolm Pirnie office to provide real-world, real-time work experience.
- assignment of a practicing environmental professional as a dedicated mentor.
