Two abandoned buildings next to the State Capitol in Columbus, Ohio, are being replaced with retail stores, office space (including a new NBC Columbus Channel 4 news station), luxury condominiums, and gardens. Malcolm Pirnie is conducting an extensive site assessment, remedial planning and design, and oversight of the cleanup operations, including the removal of demolition debris contaminated by asbestos and lead-based paint, for this gentrification project.

When our client discovered petroleum contamination on its New Jersey property left behind by a refinery that previously occupied the site, it hired Malcolm Pirnie to provide support in litigation against that company. We helped the client win a settlement to recover costs and force the former owners to remove all petroleum-related contamination at the site. We continue to monitor the ongoing remediation.

Project: Assessment and Removal of Subsurface Contamination
Location: Watervliet, NY
Faced with extensive subsurface contamination at the 140-acre Watervliet (New York) Arsenal, the New York, State Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency turned to Malcolm Pirnie. We combined in situ permeable iron reactive walls, soil excavation, on-site landfarming, off-site disposal and capping of areas that were not accessible for excavation to remediate the petroleum products and chlorinated solvents found throughout the subsurface and restore more than 25 solid waste management units (SWMUs) at the site.
